In a legal development involving the Trump administration's financial actions, New York Attorney General Letitia James has obtained a court ruling that prevents the freezing of more than $10 billion intended for childcare and support for vulnerable families in the state. According to the Attorney General’s office, the ruling ensures that these resources remain available to New Yorkers facing financial challenges.
On January 8, Attorney General Letitia James coordinated legal action with four other states against the Trump administration’s directives that threatened to freeze funds for the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF), the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, and the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG), potentially affecting over $10 billion. The following day, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York issued a temporary restraining order, halting the proposed funding freeze.
The court granted a motion for a preliminary injunction, allowing the affected states to continue accessing funds for the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF), the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, and the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG). Attorney General James emphasized that these funds are critical for many New Yorkers who rely on them for basic necessities and childcare.
The lawsuit also involved the attorneys general of California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota, who joined New York in challenging the proposed federal fund freezes. The coalition of five states collectively opposed the administration’s actions, emphasizing their intention to protect residents who rely on these funds.
