Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has announced two key appointments in New York City’s administration. Ana María Archila has been named Commissioner of International Affairs, serving as the city’s liaison with the United Nations and the U.S. State Department. Faiza Ali, who has extensive experience within the New York City Council, will assume the role of Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs. These appointments position the city to continue its international engagement and management of immigrant affairs, according to the City of New York.

Archila’s responsibilities will include overseeing leadership development programs, such as the NYC Junior Ambassadors, and advising city agencies on diplomatic matters. She previously ran for Lieutenant Governor of New York, receiving 213,210 votes, and has experience with the New York Working Families Party and several grassroots organizations. Ali, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants and former Director of the Community Engagement Division at the New York City Council, will lead the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, providing policy guidance to support and protect immigrant New Yorkers.

In announcing Ana María Archila’s appointment, Mayor Mamdani highlighted her experience and role in representing New York City in international matters. Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, noted Archila’s more than twenty years of work in nonprofit leadership and community advocacy, as well as her service on multiple organizational boards, describing her career as focused on connecting community needs with city, state, and federal programs and policies.

Faiza Ali, who has extensive experience in community engagement and immigrant advocacy, has been appointed to lead the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Ali, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, said she views the role as an opportunity to serve immigrant New Yorkers, highlighting her family’s experience in building a life in New York City and the city’s role in providing opportunities for successive generations of immigrants.

Community leaders have highlighted Archila’s and Ali’s experience in advocacy and their professional backgrounds. Mayor Mamdani’s appointments are expected to support the city’s international engagement and the administration of immigrant services through the expertise of the new commissioners.
