A 56-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when his motorcycle and a sedan collided on State Route 83 near Depot Road in Harrisville Township. Deputies and medics pronounced the rider dead at the scene, while the driver of the car was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
In a Facebook post from the Medina County Sheriff's Office, deputies said they were called to the crash at about 8:38 p.m. Preliminary findings indicate the motorcycle crossed left of center and hit a sedan. According to the post, the motorcycle was a 2002 Harley-Davidson and the car was a 2007 Mitsubishi. Investigators said it is too early to know whether alcohol or drugs played any role.
Victim, vehicles and response
Local television coverage identified the rider as Robert Arndt, 56, and confirmed the crash location on State Route 83 (Avon Lake Road) near Depot Road, according to WOIO. The Medina County Sheriff's Office and the county coroner's office are leading the investigation. Assisting agencies at the scene included the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lodi Police Department, Lodi Fire and Rescue and Alternative Paths of Medina County.
Why motorcycle crashes are so dangerous
Motorcyclists are disproportionately represented in U.S. traffic deaths. 2023 data from the National Safety Council shows motorcycles made up roughly 3% of registered vehicles but accounted for about 15% of traffic fatalities. When a motorcycle crosses the center line and strikes another vehicle head-on, the outcome is often severe or fatal because riders lack the protective structure of an enclosed vehicle.
How to help or get information
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information or video of the crash to contact Lt. Samo Mernik at 330-725-9156, according to the department's Facebook post. The investigation is ongoing, and officials urge witnesses to preserve any recordings or footage that might help them piece together exactly what happened.
