A nighttime flight ended in tragedy north of Prescott Valley on Wednesday when a small plane went down, leaving at least one person dead. The wreckage was discovered near Poquito Valley, and emergency crews stayed on scene late into the night.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were investigating the crash but released few details, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Officials warned of a large law‑enforcement presence and urged residents to avoid the area while investigators secured the scene.
Federal Aviation Administration records reviewed by local outlets show the aircraft was a Socata TB21 that went down around 8 p.m., and FAA data indicates the pilot was the only person on board. AZ Family reported authorities had not released the pilot’s identity and that the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
Investigations and next steps
Because the crash was fatal, federal investigators are expected to take the lead, with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board typically handling on‑site evidence collection and technical review. The NTSB says it investigates every civil aviation accident in the U.S. and often issues preliminary factual updates in the days after a crash.
Where the crash happened
Poquito Valley is a remote, largely rural area north of Prescott Valley where access can be slow and debris fields can be scattered, complicating recovery and evidence‑gathering. Local coverage noted deputies, fire crews and specialized investigators remained on scene into the night while roads in the immediate area were controlled to protect evidence and allow heavy equipment to work, according to KOLD.
Authorities have not released the name of the person killed and asked anyone with information or video from the area to contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. Local outlets said the FAA and NTSB will take over parts of the investigation; this story will be updated as agencies release new information, ABC15 reported.
