A woman riding a bicycle was killed Sunday night after an SUV hit her on West Airport Road in southwest Houston, according to police. The crash happened just after 9:30 p.m. just west of Hillcroft Avenue, and the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, described by police as a man in his 70s, stayed at the scene and was checked by officers.
As reported by KHOU, the vehicle involved was a Mercedes SUV, and investigators with the Vehicular Crimes Division said they do not believe impairment or speed were factors. Police told KHOU the bicycle did not appear to have lights or reflectors, and that investigators were canvassing the area for surveillance and dash-cam video that might have captured the crash. Officials said the victim's identity has not yet been released and the investigation remains ongoing.
Dark Corridor, Planned Bike Upgrades
West Airport Road is a major east-west arterial that has been the focus of greenway and roadway projects aimed at improving bike access, and planners have noted reconstruction plans that would add dedicated bike facilities along parts of the corridor. The Houston Parks Board and partner agencies have described the work as part of the Sims Bayou Greenway and regional connector projects intended to create safer bike and pedestrian links in southwest Houston.
State Trend: Cyclists Remain Vulnerable At Night
State transportation officials have repeatedly warned that people walking and bicycling face growing risk on Texas roads. TxDOT notes that bicyclist fatalities rose substantially in recent years and urges drivers to be vigilant, especially on wide, poorly lit arterials where riders without lights are harder to see.
Police Seek Video As Investigation Continues
Houston police said the Vehicular Crimes Division is continuing its probe and asked anyone with surveillance or dash-cam footage from the West Airport and Hillcroft area around the time of the crash to contact investigators. No charges had been announced as of Monday, and officials told KHOU the case remains under review.
