Early morning last Friday, a CSX train derailed in Palmetto, Georgia, with no reported injuries. Initial reports suggested about 10 train cars were on their sides across Highway 29, but CSX later clarified that six intermodal rail cars had actually left the tracks, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
CSX confirmed that the derailed cars were not carrying hazardous materials. The locomotive was removed from the site, and crews used a crane to lift cargo from the overturned cars. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
A Palmetto police officer reported hearing a "loud bang" after 1 a.m., but further details about the train’s cargo or what caused the derailment have not been released, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
CBS News Atlanta noted that a similar CSX derailment in May 2025 involved 17 cars and also resulted in no injuries or hazardous material release. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing.
