The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced that starting next week, driver license offices will no longer open at 7 a.m. This change, affecting offices statewide, comes as federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act has ended. Previously, 90 offices had opened an hour early to handle high demand for services.
NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine confirmed that the funding has been exhausted, and the extra hour of service at offices will end. The grant had allowed offices to open at 7 a.m. to meet higher customer demand. Extended hours conclude tomorrow, with the standard 8 a.m. opening resuming on February 9.
Drivers accustomed to the earlier start will need to adjust their schedules. The NCDMV indicated that future funding could allow for extended service hours, potentially including Saturdays, but no such support is currently secured.
For the latest information on office hours, customers can visit the NCDMV office locations page. The page will also provide updates on any weather-related changes to operating times, helping to keep the public informed and reduce service disruptions.
