The New York City Police Department Harbor Unit responded to a report of a bald eagle stranded on an ice floe in the Hudson River near the George Washington Bridge. The incident occurred early Monday morning when the patrol encountered the injured bird. Officers observed that the eagle was bleeding and did not move away during the rescue. Members of the unit noted that one of the bird’s claws was bleeding and provided initial care at the scene before preparing to transport it for further treatment, according to Gothamist.

Officers used an animal-control pole and a yellow sheet to secure the eagle and move it from the ice. They then covered the bird with a blanket and placed it in a crate on their vessel. Body-camera footage shared by the New York City Police Department on social media shows the rescue operation and the eagle standing alone on the ice floe.

After the rescue, the eagle was transported to The Raptor Trust in Millington, New Jersey, for treatment. ABC7NY reported that the bird is receiving care at the facility.
