A violent incident erupted in the vicinity of Mondawmin Mall in West Baltimore last night, leaving one individual dead and three others injured. As reported by CBS Baltimore, the clash, described as a shootout by Police Commissioner Richard Worley, occurred around 9:30 p.m. and involved two vehicles that had collided in the mall parking lot amidst the gunfire. "It was a shootout. It looked like it occurred here in this parking lot where the two vehicles were crashed together," Worley stated.
Officers, initially alerted to shots fired via a series of Shot-Spotter alerts, quickly descended upon the scene. Police managed to quickly recover three handguns and a rifle from the aftermath of the incident. FOX Baltimore reported that all four victims involved in the incident were male, although their ages remain unconfirmed. The search also revealed two additional victims—one found fatally injured on the 2500 block of Liberty Heights Avenue, and another non-fatally shot in the 3100 block of Tioga Parkway.
The area around the 2400 block of Liberty Heights Avenue, where the mall is located, was subsequently shut down due to the large police presence and the extent of the crime scene, which spanned multiple blocks. Commissioner Worley noted the complexity of the crime scene and the subsequent challenges facing the investigation. "As you can see, this is an extensive crime scene," he told CBS Baltimore.
While details about the individuals involved and the motive behind the shootout continue to remain limited, authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Police have issued a call to action, urging witnesses or those privy to knowledge of the incident to reach out and potentially to help break the case wide open, sharing the tip line, 1-866-7Lockup, for anyone inclined to offer assistance.
