The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) voted against a settlement proposal with the City of New Orleans regarding school funding. The proposal would have ended property tax fees in exchange for a 7.5% fee on sales taxes. OPSB said the agreement would have cost district schools over $11 million annually, according to WWLTV.
The funding dispute dates back to allegations that a previous city administration withdrew from a financial agreement estimated at $90 million over ten years. A judge previously ruled a prior settlement invalid but required the city to honor a $10 million budgeted promise by former Mayor LaToya Cantrell, as per WDSU report.
The OPSB stated it will continue negotiations with the city to secure funding for district schools. FOX 8 Live report that the board is working to prioritize educational needs while seeking a resolution.
