It's been two years since Michigan put the brakes on irresponsible firearm storage, and the numbers are in—over 110,000 gun locks have found their way into homes statewide since February 2024. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), in a recent update, highlighted this milestone along with the education and prevention efforts that have been the backbone of this initiative. The secure storage law, which mandates unloaded, locked-up guns in the presence of minors, was touted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as a move to protect Michiganders "at home, school, church, work or as they go about their daily lives," as reported by MDHHS.
MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel commented, per MDHHS, "Two years after Michigan’s secure storage law took effect, we continue to see how critical safe firearm storage is to protecting children, families and communities from preventable gun violence." Her department, alongside Michigan State Police, schools, and community organizations have been doling out free cable-style gun locks across the state—a boon for safety, with 63,180 distributed just in the past year. The law's anniversary serves as a reminder of the preventable tragedies the state is aiming to deter.
Education efforts haven't been huddled in the background either. All educational institutions in Michigan, from the biggest public schools to the smallest academies, are required to arm parents and caregivers with secure firearm storage info. This outreach is part of the wider Safer Schools project, ensuring a united front in keeping guns out of the wrong hands. Trinity Health Muskegon's Holly Alway recognized the synergy between education and access, saying, "This law works best when education and access go hand in hand" in an interview shared by MDHHS.
To get their hands on the gear, residents can pop by a local MDHHS office or check with their local health department. Home visits from MDHHS staff also come with the option to secure a gun lock for those who express a need or make a request. Project ChildSafe police partners extend this network, with installation instructions handily packaged with the locks, and a visit to their website offers more detailed guidance. The comprehensive approach hopes to cut down on gun-related incidents that, with a simple click of a lock, could easily be avoided.
