Palm Beach State College is set to receive a substantial $4.95 million boost for the establishment of a new workforce program in computing and emerging quantum technologies. This grant is part of a larger $8 million package announced by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. These funds, distributed through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund, are earmarked for critical infrastructure investments and workforce training in sectors such as aerospace and aviation, military and defense, cybersecurity, and financial services, as reported by Boca Post.
With the goal to quickly adapt to rapidly evolving tech spaces, Palm Beach State College is moving to modernize a historic college building in downtown West Palm Beach. This Quantum Innovation Center will feature quantum simulation labs and cloud-computing classrooms designed to position the county as a hub of technology and innovation. WPBF details the center's aim to help almost 1,000 students prepare for careers in the tech world over the next decade. Palm Beach State College President Ava L. Parker highlighted the importance of being innovative and staying "ahead of the game."
The funded program will offer a "Quantum Systems Certification Program" with short, modular training spread over 8-week terms. According to the Boca Post, the program is expected to enroll 970 students, producing 570 completions within ten years. It will provide a blend of adult career changers and those seeking swift reskilling opportunities with essential skills and industry-recognized credentials like AWS Cloud Practitioner and Python programming certification.
The initiative also plans to develop a pipeline for future for-credit offerings, potentially including an associate degree track in quantum computing. As Palm Beach State expands, the training may also be made available across the college's campuses, significant for residents in Boca Raton, which already hosts a Palm Beach State campus. The varied delivery options, including in-person, hybrid, and online, are to ensure broad countywide access, "Boca Post" states. Meanwhile, additional grants were awarded to projects outside Palm Beach County, including Melbourne Orlando International Airport's apron expansion and Broward College's Aviation and Maintenance Accelerated Express Program, according to Boca Post.
These investments are described by state officials as strategic moves to address "high demand regional and statewide needs." The Florida Job Growth Grant Fund is reported by FloridaCommerce to have awarded over $305 million since 2019, fostering more than 41,000 new job creations and supporting over 32,000 educational opportunities in the workforce sector.
