
A serious incident occurred in Lowell, Massachusetts, last night, when a pedestrian was struck by a Lowell police cruiser near UMass Lowell's campus. The collision, as reported by NBC10 Boston, took place at the intersection of Wilder Street and Bachelder Street, adjacent to the UMass Lowell South Campus.
Authorities, including the Lowell Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, are delving into the crash details. Inconclusively, the involvement of whether the police cruiser was in response to a call or the status of its emergency lights during the incident, has officially not been stated. Shortly before 7 p.m., the crash occurred, leaving a large backpack visible in the middle of the road and the condition of the victim, which remains uncertain at this time.
UMass Lowell reached out to by WCVB, confirmed a pedestrian was indeed hit outside the McGauvran Center. In a statement, a university spokesperson said, "The thoughts of the UMass Lowell community are with those involved in this tragic incident." Additionally, they have announced that counseling resources will be made available to community members affected by the event today.
The intersection, reportedly not very busy at night according to students, still became the scene of the serious crash. Assisting in the ongoing investigation is the Massachusetts State Police Recon Team. No further details have been released at this time as the investigation continues.
