It's official: Pittsburgh is home to some of the finest museums in the United States. In a recent reveal by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, not one, not two, but four area attractions have scored top honors, emphasizing the city's vibrant cultural scene and commitment to educational experiences in history, science, and childhood play.
Leading the pack for the third consecutive year, the Heinz History Center clinches the title of America's number one History Museum. "This national honor reflects the History Center's impact in connecting and inspiring communities here in Western Pennsylvania and across the nation," Andy Masich, president and CEO, remarked in a statement obtained by CBS News Pittsburgh. But the accolades don't end at historical narratives — Pittsburgh's burgeoning young minds also have a top-tier haven at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, which has just been crowned the premier Children's Museum in the country.
Executive Director Jane Werner conveyed the museum's collective excitement to CBS News Pittsburgh, "We are thrilled to be acknowledged for our innovative, hands-on exhibits and programs as the leading children's museum in the country." Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum rolled into the spotlight as the best small town museum in the nation, an ode to the Trolley Era's rich heritage — and clear evidence that size doesn't always correlate with impact. Jeanine DeBor, executive director and CEO, stated, "We are deeply honored to receive this national recognition along with so many other prestigious, small town museums."
Science enthusiasts have more to cheer about as well. The Moonshot Museum, a newcomer that opened its doors in 2022, snagged the No. 9 spot for Best Science Museum, an impressive feat given its recency and the competition's magnates. Dr. Jimyse L. Brown, executive director, praised their innovative approach in a conversation with WPXI. "With partnerships spanning nine states and collaborations across sectors, we are redefining what a science museum can be." And not far behind, the Kamin Science Center landed itself the No. 3 position, quietly boasting its educational prowess as a formidable institution.
Such national recognition is a celebratory moment for the Pittsburgh community and a beckoning for visitors far and wide to explore the wealth of knowledge, history, and fun these top-rated museums have to offer.
