What started as a midafternoon police pursuit through Huron Township ended with a battered line of patrol cars, a suspect in cuffs at a landfill, and officers counting up a small arsenal pulled from the front seat.
Authorities say a 54-year-old Taylor man is accused of trying to run over a Huron Township police officer and ramming multiple patrol vehicles during a high-speed chase Wednesday that finally stopped at the Carleton Farms landfill. Dashcam stills released by Huron Township show the suspect’s vehicle tearing along two-lane roads and cutting through neighborhood yards before officers boxed it in and made the arrest. Three Huron Township officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Dashcam Captures 90 MPH Chase
According to CBS Detroit, Taylor police notified Huron Township around 1:51 p.m. that they were chasing a suspect believed to be armed. Huron Township officers joined in, and dashcam video from their cruisers shows the fleeing vehicle pushing toward 90 mph on narrow two-lane roads and dirt paths.
The footage shows the car cutting across property on Ash Road, plowing through yards and damaging fences as it went. Officers temporarily pulled back from the pursuit, but police say the driver stopped briefly in the 37000 block of Ash Road, then took off again.
Landfill Standoff Ends With Arrest
The chase eventually rolled onto service drives at Carleton Farms Landfill in Sumpter Township. There, police say the suspect tried to ram several Huron Township vehicles before officers finally blocked the car and moved in.
Taylor police took the 54-year-old Taylor resident into custody around 2:05 p.m. Local reporting notes that officers later found nine guns in the vehicle, described as a mix of handguns and scoped rifles. As reported by WXYZ, the suspect remains in Taylor police custody and is expected to face criminal charges.
Officers Treated; Damage Under Investigation
Three Huron Township officers suffered minor injuries during the chase and were treated on scene by the Huron Township Fire Department, according to police. No other injuries were reported, which, given the speeds and the neighborhood driving, is something of a small miracle.
After the arrest, officers returned to the Ash Road area to document damaged fences and torn-up yards. Huron Township officials say the case reports will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging review, according to CBS Detroit.
What Comes Next
The suspect remains held by Taylor police while prosecutors sort through the reports and decide on charges. Formal counts have not yet been released. Local reporting notes that the recovery of multiple firearms from the vehicle will be part of that review, per WXYZ.
