A Port St. Lucie man is in custody following the fatal shooting of his father, Glen Morrison, during a domestic dispute. According to reports from CBS12, the altercation between Sheldon Morrison, 41, and his father occurred early Wednesday morning and ended with the suspect allegedly fleeing in his car before being captured in Broward County.
Officers responded to the scene at the Morrison residence around 7:47 a.m. and discovered Glen Morrison with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead inside the home. The Port St. Lucie Police Department, indicated that Sheldon Morrison had shot his father and fled, prompting a manhunt. The shooting allegedly stemmed from a disagreement, which escalated when Sheldon fetched a gun from the garage and shot his father, his mother called the police immediately afterward.
Neighbors expressed shock at the violence within what was believed to be a quiet family. "I was surprised because, like I said, they were quite a quiet family, you know, no commotion over there. Never heard anybody yelling and screaming, or very seldom heard the dog barking," neighbor Mitchel Oxendine told CBS12. The nearby Somerset College Preparatory Academy was temporarily placed on a modified lockdown during the search for Morrison.
Additional details from WPBF indicate the argument may have begun over dog walking responsibilities. Sheldon Morrison allegedly, told his mother after the shooting, "I thought he was going to kill you." A former state attorney reviewing the case notes the self-defense claim will be difficult to prove, as the victim, Glen Morrison was not armed and had no history of violence. "The defendant had to go into another part of the house to go retrieve a weapon, so the threat was over at that point, and he brought it back with a gun," said Dave Aronberg, former Palm Beach County State Attorney.
After being apprehended in Hollywood, Florida, without incident, Sheldon Morrison has been transported back to St. Lucie County, where he currently awaits trial on murder charges. There is an anticipation that he will plead self-defense, although the evidence and circumstances surrounding the incident may complicate such a defense. Public records show that Morrison is being held in the St. Lucie County Jail.
