Memphis Light, Gas & Water has flipped the script on traditional utility billing, rolling out PowerPay on Tuesday for residential customers with smart meters. Instead of waiting for a monthly statement, customers can preload cash into a prepaid account and then watch the balance drop in real time as they use electricity, gas, and water. The utility says the setup eliminates familiar headaches such as monthly bills, late fees, reconnection charges, and deposits, and it is open even to customers who already owe money on their accounts.

How PowerPay Works

According to an MLGW brochure, customers can enroll through the MyUsage app, on the web, by phone, or in person at one of MLGW’s community offices. New customers have to visit an office to open an account, while existing customers can sign up by calling (901) 544-6549. Accounts can be started with as little as $100. The brochure explains that MyUsage links directly to each home’s smart meter so customers can track consumption, set alerts, and decide when to “refuel” their balances.

Budgeting Without A Monthly Bill

Local coverage has highlighted that MLGW is pitching PowerPay as a budgeting tool for customers who prefer smaller, more frequent payments instead of one larger bill. The utility suggests making payments in roughly $50 increments and turning on automated alerts to avoid running the balance too low. As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the option is open to all residential customers who have smart meters and internet access, and it can be used even if the account already carries an outstanding balance.

Context And Early Evidence

The prepaid rollout follows a 4% rate increase that took effect in January as the final step in a multi-year adjustment, a move MLGW said is helping pay for grid upgrades. The utility has said that the change added about $5 a month to the average residential bill. MLGW’s materials point to similar prepaid programs that have reduced energy use, and a 2023 academic study in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization found that pay-as-you-go billing cut energy consumption by roughly 12 percent compared with pay-later systems, suggesting that having to watch a live balance can nudge households to use less.

What To Watch For

Customers who sign up are encouraged to activate low-balance notifications and use small test top-ups to get a feel for how their daily routines drain the account. It is also worth remembering that prepaid plans mainly change when you hand over the money, not whether your total bill is smaller over time. PowerPay can help some customers avoid surprise statements and extra fees, but it is not a stand-in for longer-term assistance programs aimed at households facing ongoing affordability problems.
