A quiet early morning drive on San Antonio's West Side turned deadly Saturday when a man running into traffic on Loop 410 was hit by two vehicles and killed, authorities said.

San Antonio police were called just after 5 a.m. to the 7700 block of NW Loop 410 near Military Drive West, where officers found the pedestrian unresponsive in the eastbound lanes. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash shut down traffic and kicked off an investigation that stretched into the morning commute.

According to KSAT, a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department states the man was running back and forth in front of eastbound traffic when two vehicles, both traveling east, struck him. Both drivers stopped and cooperated with investigators, the report notes. Police have not released the man's identity, pending notification of his family.

Pedestrian Deaths Remain A Statewide Problem

Pedestrian fatalities have been a stubborn, long-running problem in Texas and across the country. An analysis by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that thousands of people walking were killed in 2024 and highlighted troubling trends, including a high share of nighttime deaths, hit-and-runs and crashes involving SUVs and pickup trucks.

Transportation and safety advocates say those trends make high-speed corridors like Loop 410 especially dangerous territory for anyone on foot, particularly in the dark hours of early morning.

Loop 410 Has Seen Other Deadly Crashes This Year

The West Side stretch of Loop 410 has already seen more than its share of tragedy this year. Earlier in February, the Bexar County medical examiner identified a woman who died after being struck while trying to cross Loop 410 near State Highway 151, as reported by KSAT.

Those crashes have repeatedly forced temporary lane closures and sparked renewed calls for stronger pedestrian safety measures along some of San Antonio's busiest highways.

What Investigators Want From The Public

SAPD's collision investigators are still piecing together the details of Saturday's fatal crash and say more information will be released as the case develops.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who may have dashcam or security video from around the 7700 block of NW Loop 410 near Military Drive West around the time of the incident, is asked to contact the San Antonio Police Department's collision investigation unit or Crime Stoppers to help with the investigation.
