Gunfire cut through the early morning quiet in Charlotte’s South End today, when a person was shot along one of the neighborhood’s busiest late-night stretches, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. on West Tremont Avenue in a cluster of bars and restaurants. Medics took the victim to a hospital, where they were expected to survive. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have opened an investigation and officers were seen canvassing the area for clues.
According to WBTV, the shooting occurred near the PARA restaurant on West Tremont Avenue. There was no immediate word on a motive or any arrests, and paramedics said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Where It Happened
South End is a compact nightlife corridor that runs roughly between South Tryon Street and South Boulevard. The gunfire erupted just steps from late-night restaurants and the nearby light-rail station.
PARA, which operates on West Tremont Avenue, lists its location on PARA's website. The tight concentration of bars, restaurants, and foot traffic in this section can make it tougher for officers to track down witnesses and collect evidence after the fact.
South End's Recent Violence and Police Efforts
Violent incidents in South End are relatively rare but tend to grab attention when they happen. In 2023, a deadly shooting in the neighborhood left two people dead, according to Axios Charlotte.
City and police officials have pointed to targeted enforcement efforts as one way to keep the area safer. CMPD has highlighted Operation TRIO as one such strategy to reduce violence and improve safety in busy parts of the city, per reporting by WFAE.
