A pre-dawn rollover crash on Milwaukee’s south side left at least one person dead early today, turning a quiet residential block near the Brewers’ ballpark into an active investigation scene for hours.
Milwaukee police say the single-vehicle wreck happened around 3 a.m. near South 36th Street and West Mitchell Street in the Leighton Park neighborhood, just south of American Family Field. The car ended up on its roof with debris scattered across a front yard, as emergency crews worked the scene and neighbors watched from their windows and porches.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office told WISN 12 News they were called to the crash, confirming at least one fatality. 12 News crews reported seeing a body covered by a tarp, and the vehicle was found on its side on a patch of grass near several homes in Leighton Park.
Formal identification of the victim and the official cause of death will come from the medical examiner after next-of-kin notifications and further review. The crash site sits just south of American Family Field, which the ballpark’s official page lists at One Brewers Way. We have reached out to Milwaukee police for additional details and will update this story as authorities release more information.
Recent crashes on Mitchell Street
This is not the first deadly crash along this stretch of Mitchell Street in recent weeks. Earlier this year, a collision near 37th and Mitchell that began after a vehicle fled a traffic stop ended in a rollover that killed an 18-year-old, according to FOX6 News. That case was handled by the Milwaukee Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit and served as a stark reminder of how quickly early-morning incidents on this corridor can turn fatal.
Milwaukee police are investigating Sunday’s rollover. No names have been released and no charges have been announced. This is a developing story, and more information is expected as the department and the medical examiner complete their work.
