Four workers were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Thursday morning after scaffolding came crashing down at a construction site in West Palm Beach, authorities said. The violent collapse hurled metal and debris into the street, triggering a fast-moving response from fire, rescue and police crews as nearby blocks were quickly sealed off so medics could reach the injured.
West Palm Beach Fire Rescue and police officers were called to the 300 block of Lakeview Avenue near Dixie Highway at about 7:10 a.m., according to WPBF 25 News. The outlet shared video from the scene that shows twisted scaffolding, emergency vehicles and first responders working around the mangled structure.
Scene and response
Officials told WPTV the collapse happened at the Mr. C Residences development and that all four victims were taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to WPTV, three of those workers were later listed in stable condition, while the condition of the fourth remained unclear as crews continued working to secure the site.
Road closures and local impact
Parts of the 300 block of Lakeview Avenue and lanes of Dixie Highway were shut down while crews cleared debris and investigators checked for additional structural hazards, WPBF 25 News reported. Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area while the emergency response and cleanup were underway.
Investigation and safety context
City officials said investigators were on scene Thursday morning to figure out what caused the scaffold failure and whether required safety procedures had been followed. Federal scaffold rules laid out in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L cover issues such as scaffold capacity, proper assembly and fall protection, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration often steps in after serious construction-site collapses. Those regulations form the baseline for inspections, according to OSHA.
Scaffolding and construction collapses have led to serious injuries and deaths in Florida in recent years, including a deadly incident near the Orlando area that killed two workers, as documented by CBS News. Safety advocates have repeatedly pointed to enforcement, training and proper equipment as crucial to preventing these kinds of disasters.
Next steps
Authorities had not released the names of the victims as of Thursday morning and had not announced any citations or findings about what went wrong. The incident was first reported by local outlets and later aggregated by Spot On Florida. This story will be updated as hospitals, city officials or the project developer release additional information.
