An early morning fire tore through a St. Clair County Sheriff's Office storage facility in Kimball Township today, leaving the building significantly damaged and prompting an immediate investigation. The blaze started just before 4 a.m. and was knocked down by about 9 a.m. at a site near the county airport.
According to ClickOnDetroit, fire crews had the flames under control by 9 a.m. The storage structure reportedly held ammunition, evidence and special-response gear, and investigators remained on scene to sort through the damage and figure out what went wrong.

Online map listings place the site near St. Clair County International Airport, which Mapcarta lists at 250 N. Airport Drive in Kimball Township. The airport sits roughly five miles southwest of downtown Port Huron, putting the fire in a semi-rural stretch of the county. Initial reports did not indicate any impact on airport operations.
Storage security in the area
Storage units in the Range Road area were the focus of a separate burglary investigation last year, with the Port Huron Major Crimes Unit and the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office looking into a string of break-ins, CBS Detroit reported. Local radio coverage similarly urged Storage of America customers on Range Road to check their units after stolen property was recovered, per WPHM. Authorities have not linked those thefts to the Wednesday morning blaze.
