A standoff at a Wittmann home turned deadly Saturday afternoon when an adult woman was shot and killed, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to a house on Myers Avenue, near U.S. 60 and Center Street in the small northwest-valley community, and quickly set up a perimeter while investigators moved in. Authorities have not yet released the names of the woman who died or the man detained in connection with the incident, and no deputies were hurt.
Scene and response
Deputies arrived just after noon and tried to persuade a man inside the home to come out, but he refused to cooperate and a SWAT team was brought in, according to Arizona's Family. The man later walked out without a firearm and was detained. After the property was secured, detectives found an adult woman who had been shot. She later died from her injuries, the outlet reported. The sheriff’s office said detectives are still piecing together what led up to the shooting and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to residents.
Sheriff's account
The sheriff’s public feed repeated that there is “no threat to the community” and confirmed that a suspect is in custody, while again noting that no deputies were injured, as reported by KOLD. Officials have not said whether any charges are forthcoming or whether there was a prior relationship between the man detained and the woman who died. The area stayed blocked off for hours as homicide detectives processed the scene.
Local context
Wittmann and neighboring west-valley communities have experienced only rare but serious incidents of violence in recent years, including a 2018 triple homicide that drew a major response from the sheriff’s office, according to ABC15. Detectives have not given a timeline for when more details will be released. This remains a developing case and the story will be updated as the sheriff’s office provides additional information.
