A woman is in critical condition after a hit-and-run on St. Paul’s North End Tuesday night, marking the city’s second serious case in about a week.
Officers found her lying in the roadway near Rice Street and Pennsylvania Avenue with severe injuries. St. Paul Fire medics rushed her to Regions Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
What Police Say
According to the Pioneer Press, officers on patrol came upon the woman near the Rice and Pennsylvania intersection and reported that her injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Investigators say the case is being treated as a hit-and-run and remains under active investigation. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released the victim’s name.
Second Crash In A Week
This latest hit-and-run comes on the heels of another deadly incident not far away. The Star Tribune reported that 66-year-old Donald John Piele was struck on Feb. 11 while riding a mobility scooter near Phalen Boulevard and Rose Avenue. He died at Regions Hospital the next day.
In that earlier case, investigators are still looking for the vehicle involved, and no suspect has been publicly identified.
How To Help
Police are asking anyone who might have seen something to step forward, especially if they have video. Crime Stoppers of Minnesota operates a hotline at 1-800-222-8477 and an online tip form at Crime Stoppers of Minnesota. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
Investigators say preserved dash-cam, doorbell, or cell phone footage can be crucial in tracking down a fleeing driver, even if the clip seems minor or unclear to the person who captured it.
Safety On Rice Street
The crash happened along Rice Street, a busy north–south corridor that Ramsey County officials have repeatedly flagged for safety concerns. The county says the corridor is in the middle of a multi-year reconstruction effort aimed at calming traffic and improving crossings.
According to the county’s project plans, Rice Street is set to get fewer through lanes, a center turn lane, a shared-use path, and other pedestrian upgrades as part of a broader push to make the area safer. Residents and local officials have long complained about dangerous driving on the corridor, and the recent crashes are adding new urgency to those concerns.
St. Paul police say the investigation into Tuesday’s hit-and-run is ongoing and that more details will be released as they become available. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or the St. Paul Police Department so investigators can follow up.
