A 33-year-old man allegedly smashed a window and fired a gun outside the U.S. Market on the 1000 block of Broadway Street NE in northeast Salem last Saturday. No one was hurt, and Jonathan Roy Debnam of Monmouth was arrested without incident.
Police account of the shooting
Officers responded around 6:55 p.m. last Saturday to a report of gunfire at the market and quickly zeroed in on Debnam as the suspected shooter, according to a media release from the Salem Police Department on their Facebook page. Investigators say Debnam retrieved a handgun from his vehicle, used it to break a store window and then fired shots that landed only a few feet from where the clerk had taken cover. Monmouth police later found the involved vehicle near their department, and Debnam was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail.
Multi-agency response and local violence efforts
The department credited patrol officers and detectives from its Violent Crimes Unit, along with help from Keizer Police, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Monmouth Police and Independence Police, for the fast arrest. That kind of coordinated response is part of Salem’s Community Violence Reduction Initiative, which targets resources and prevention efforts in areas where shootings are concentrated. The city’s planning and problem analysis for the initiative are posted on its website and shape how local agencies work together on investigations.
Charges and next steps
Debnam was booked on several charges, including attempted murder in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon and menacing, according to the release. Salem police say the investigation remains active, and they have directed further inquiries to the Marion County District Attorney's Office. Authorities reported no injuries and asked anyone with additional information to contact investigators, according to the department.
