San Diego is heating up under bright blue skies today, with temperatures jumping into the low 80s and inland neighborhoods running hotter than the immediate shoreline. Light northeast breezes are keeping most beaches pleasant, although the more exposed spots could still see gusts up to 20 mph.
Afternoon Heat And Breeze
Highs near 80°F are expected this afternoon, with northeast winds generally 0 to 10 mph and occasional gusts up to 20 mph. Tonight should cool things down into the mid-50s. A High Surf Advisory for west-facing beaches expired at 6 a.m., but breaking waves and a heightened rip-current risk may linger along the more open stretches of coast.
A compact low-pressure system is forecast to move in Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing about a 25 to 30 percent chance of showers Tuesday afternoon and a higher chance Tuesday night. Mountain and desert areas could see gusty southwest to west winds that may reach 35 to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service San Diego.
Surf And Beach Safety
Even with the advisory dropped, surf remains elevated, and lifeguards are still warning about strong rip currents and the occasional sneaker wave. The message is simple: steer clear of rocks and unguarded swimming areas.
San Diego Lifeguard Services continues to post beach-safety guidance and current conditions. Officials recommend swimming only near lifeguard towers and paying close attention to posted flags.
What To Expect
If you are heading outside, plan for a sunny, warm afternoon and bring layers, especially if you will be near the water where any lingering marine influence can keep things cooler. It is a good day to secure loose outdoor items before the midweek breeze picks up, and you may want a light jacket handy for Tuesday night as temperatures trend cooler and winds strengthen later in the week.
