Seattle kicked off the workweek under a familiar gray curtain today, as rain moved in, clouding up the sky and keeping temperatures in the mid 40s to low 50s. Steady showers are expected through the afternoon, making roads slick and slowing commutes across the city.
Afternoon Commute And Impacts
Forecasters expect steady rain through the day with a high near 51°F. The National Weather Service projects new rainfall amounts of about a tenth to a quarter of an inch this afternoon. South-southeast winds around 5 to 10 mph will keep things relatively mild, with stronger gusts possible along the coast and in the foothills.
On the roads, plan for slower travel. Drivers are urged to allow extra time, use headlights in low visibility, and steer clear of standing water that can hide potholes or cause hydroplaning.
Skokomish River Flood Watch
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Skokomish River in Mason County after water levels ran high earlier. Forecasters say the river could rise back to near minor flood stage tonight, which would mean flooding of valley roads and low-lying pastures.
Residents in the Skokomish Valley should avoid low-lying roads, follow official guidance, and remember the warning: turn around, don't drown if you encounter floodwater. An earlier Sunday update dug into the watch and high-tide flooding concerns: Sunday's soggy setup.
Rest Of The Week
After Monday's soaking, high pressure builds in on Tuesday and Wednesday for a brief, unseasonably mild stretch. Highs are expected to climb into the upper 50s to around 60°F, with generally dry conditions offering a break from the rain.
That quieter pattern looks short-lived. The ridge is expected to weaken late in the week, and another system may return rain over the weekend, with mountain snow levels dropping again.
What To Do
Plan outdoor activities with some flexibility. Secure loose items that might blow around, keep a rain jacket handy, and give yourself extra travel time in wet conditions. If you are heading to shoreline areas or out on the water, check for marine advisories in advance and avoid any flooded streets you encounter.
