A Mesa apartment complex near Southern Avenue and Greenfield Road turned into a large police scene late Thursday afternoon after reports of shots fired and a person possibly barricaded inside one of the units. By the time the dust settled, officers had cleared the area, said everyone involved was in custody, and confirmed there were no injuries. Detectives stayed on site into the evening to sort out what exactly unfolded.
What police reported
Officers were called out shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday on reports of gunfire at an apartment complex, according to 12News. Mesa police told the station they initially believed a person was barricaded inside a unit. After officers moved in, the department said “everyone involved” was taken into custody. Police told the outlet there were no reports of injuries and that the investigation was still active.
How this fits with recent Mesa incidents
Thursday’s call adds to a recent run of barricade and domestic-violence-related standoffs Mesa officers have had to manage this winter. In mid-January, a domestic-violence call near University Drive and Gilbert Road turned into an overnight barricade that ended with a suspect taken into custody after SWAT negotiations, as reported by Arizona's Family. In a separate November standoff, police said a suspect fired multiple rounds and a bullet went through a neighboring home; that case led to felony charges and a reported $1 million bond, according to ABC15.
Investigation remains active
Mesa police have not released additional details about a possible motive or potential charges in Thursday’s incident and asked anyone with information to contact the department, according to 12News. This story will be updated as Mesa police or prosecutors release more information.
