A quiet South Jordan neighborhood turned into a tactical scene Thursday when police and a regional SWAT team moved in on a family home near South Jordan Parkway and 2950 West, arresting a 22-year-old man after a tense standoff.
According to officers, the man entered the residence in violation of an active protective order and refused repeated commands to come out. He was heard yelling inside and punching walls, as neighbors were told to shelter in place while negotiators tried to talk him down and the tactical team staged nearby. The shelter-in-place order was later lifted, and everyone inside the home got out safely.
In a post from the South Jordan Police Department, officials said officers and the South Valley SWAT negotiation team made multiple public announcements telling the suspect to come out before sending in a tactical team when those efforts went nowhere. The department said the suspect, a 22-year-old male, was taken into custody safely and later booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. The post emphasized that "there is currently no threat to the public."
Regional tactical response
The South Valley SWAT and negotiation team is a multijurisdictional unit that pulls officers from South Jordan, Riverton, Draper, and Herriman, according to Gephardt Daily. The joint unit regularly responds to high-risk domestic incidents and barricaded subjects in the south Salt Lake Valley.
What the law says
Under Utah law, intentionally violating a protective order is generally charged as a class A misdemeanor, with repeat or aggravated violations eligible for felony treatment, per Utah Code §76-5-108. State statute also instructs officers to arrest alleged perpetrators when there is probable cause to believe a protective order has been violated.
Help and next steps
Victim advocates and support services are available through local and statewide programs, and anyone in immediate danger is urged to call 911. South Jordan's Victim Services program lists local advocates, referrals, and contact information for survivors, according to South Jordan Victim Services.
Investigators continued processing the scene and asked anyone with information to contact the South Jordan Police Department. In its public post, the department reiterated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
