A fatal crash on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County last Saturday claimed the life of a 64-year-old man from St. Johns. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, his white Jeep Cherokee collided with the rear of a semi-truck just south of County Road 210.

The crash occurred around 12:55 a.m., with the Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound in the outside lane. According to First Coast News, the Florida Highway Patrol reported that the driver failed to maintain a safe following distance, resulting in a collision with the rear of a semi-truck’s trailer. The man was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he later died. His identity has not been released.

The driver of the gray Freightliner semi, a 38-year-old man from Pompano Beach, was unharmed. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. News4Jax reports that an investigation into the crash is ongoing to determine the full circumstances.

As per Action News Jax, the collision occurred while both vehicles were traveling in the same northbound lane. The Jeep Cherokee struck the rear of the semi-truck, but authorities have not yet determined the underlying cause for the driver’s failure to maintain a safe following distance.
