Neighbors in Charlotte’s Steele Creek area had reason to wonder what was going on Tuesday, after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said an “explosive demonstration” took place in its Steele Creek Division. The department’s brief public notice did not say whether there were any injuries, evacuations or road closures connected to the incident.
CMPD shared the alert on its official X account, linking out for more details. The social media post from CMPD News carried a timestamp of 4:34 p.m. UTC on Tuesday and pointed users to an associated incident page on Atlas One.
Past controlled detonations have been routine
Controlled detonations by police bomb squads are a standard way to deal with explosives or suspicious devices, and they can create loud booms that easily rattle nearby homes. In October 2023, for instance, CMPD carried out a controlled detonation after investigating a suspicious device and later reported that there were no injuries and no remaining threats, according to WSOC-TV.
What CMPD's bomb unit handles
The department lists an Arson/Bomb Unit within its Special Operations group that is responsible for explosive ordnance, controlled detonations and related training. The CMPD organizational page also notes a training academy on Shopton Road and provides Bomb Squad contact information, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
As of publication, CMPD had not expanded on its short social media alert about the Steele Creek “explosive demonstration.” Residents looking for clarity will have to keep an eye on the department’s official accounts and the linked Atlas One incident page for any updates.
