What started as a speeding BMW on the Bronx River Parkway early Tuesday ended with a wrecked car in Yonkers, two arrests, and a pair of seized handguns, police say.
According to investigators, the BMW had been reported stolen in the Bronx shortly before the incident. The car crashed after making a U-turn in a parking lot off Bronx River Road and slamming into two parked vehicles. Both occupants bolted on foot but were caught nearby, and now face felony weapons and stolen-property charges.
How the chase unfolded
A Westchester County Police officer was sitting stationary along the northbound Bronx River Parkway at about 1:44 a.m. when a BMW flew past at a high rate of speed, according to Newport Dispatch. The officer followed as the car entered the Cross County Parkway westbound and pulled it over.
When the officer approached the stop, the driver allegedly hit the gas, heading south on the Bronx River Parkway before jumping off at Bronx River Road. The BMW then tried a U-turn in a parking lot, crashed into parked cars, and came to a stop, Newport Dispatch reported.
Multiple units from Westchester County, Yonkers and the NYPD responded. Both occupants ran but did not get far, and officers took them into custody a short distance from the crash scene.
Parkway pursuits have risks
A New York State Police summary of a separate April 29, 2025 stolen-vehicle pursuit in Westchester, which also ended in a crash and an arrest, underscores how quickly a routine traffic stop on busy connectors like the Bronx River and Cross County parkways can spiral.
In that earlier case, as in Tuesday’s incident, local and state agencies coordinated their response to reduce the risk to other drivers and bystanders during a short, fast-moving chase. Officials say such episodes are a reminder of why officers often limit active pursuits and instead rely on coordinated tactics whenever possible.
Charges and next steps
The two suspects, ages 18 and 21, are charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property, according to Newport Dispatch. Police say two handguns were recovered from the BMW, which had been reported stolen in the Bronx a short time earlier.
The driver also faces misdemeanor counts of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving. After being arraigned in Yonkers City Court, both suspects were turned over to the NYPD, and the investigation remains active.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the two individuals. The crash briefly tangled early-morning traffic as officers documented the scene, and police are asking anyone with additional information to contact local law enforcement as the case moves through the courts.
