Hruska’s Kolaches has officially traded corners in Sugar House, opening its new location Tuesday at 1751 S. 1100 E and celebrating by handing out free sweet kolaches to anyone who walked through the door during the grand re-opening. The family-run bakery shut down its longtime shop at 2030 S. 900 E over the weekend to finish the move. For die-hard early birds, the first 100 customers between 6:30 and 7 a.m. scored a surprise Kolache Card worth up to $130.
The bakery teased the festivities in an Instagram post, promising a free sweet kolache all day and surprise Kolache Cards for the earliest arrivals, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. The Tribune also noted that regular hours at the new Sugar House spot run from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Loan and permits helped make the move possible
Salt Lake City signed off on a $200,000 economic development loan last June to help Hruska’s renovate the new space and keep staff on the payroll at the Sugar House location, city officials told KSL. City records show the bakery also pulled permits for a fire sprinkler system along with mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work to complete the buildout.
What’s changed at 1100 East
The renovation added roughly 250 square feet to the compact blue corner building, plus a new patio for customers to sit and linger with their kolaches, a larger kitchen, and more parking to keep up with demand, the owners told The Salt Lake Tribune. The Hruska siblings said they see the new shop as a hub for their Salt Lake operation, even as they keep the product line and family recipes unchanged.
Past tenants and a tougher stretch of storefronts
The 1100 East corner has seen a carousel of food businesses over the past decade, most recently Brownies! Brownies! Brownies!, and city officials are hoping Hruska’s can jump-start activity along that section of the corridor, according to Building Salt Lake. Officials told the city council that the loan is expected to retain nine jobs and create two more.
Where to find Hruska’s now
Hruska’s locations now include Sugar House in Salt Lake City, West Jordan, American Fork, Orem, and Provo. The company lists the Sugar House address and phone number on its site at hruskaskolaches.com. For the grand re-opening, the Sugar House shop stuck to early and mid-day service, with morning and early afternoon hours that match the chain’s usual schedule.
For Sugar House regulars, the move brings back a familiar lineup of kolaches packed with fruit, jam, and savory fillings, just in a bigger and more polished space. The giveaways guaranteed a long morning line of loyal fans and curious neighbors, and customers should expect some hefty waits in the early days as the bakery calibrates production to match the new location’s traffic.
