What started as a gut-punch for the Seattle Sounders quickly turned into a statement win at Lumen Field. After Jordan Morris exited early with an injury in the season opener, hometown favorite Paul Rothrock came off the bench, set up the opener and then scored one himself in a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids.
Rothrock answers the call
Thrown into the match within the opening minutes, Rothrock wasted no time making his presence felt. He pounced on a loose ball and whipped in a cross that Albert Rusnák headed home in the 15th minute, then iced the result with a 62nd-minute finish, according to Sounders FC. The club’s recap also notes the 2-0 final and an announced crowd of 31,606 at the Emerald Queen Casino Pitch.
Morris leaves inside the first 10 minutes
The night took an early turn when Morris was forced off inside the first 10 minutes after picking up a knock in Seattle’s home opener. The Associated Press described the issue as noncontact and placed Morris’s exit around the eighth minute, with Rothrock immediately injected into the attack. The sudden change forced Seattle to adjust on the fly in a match that was supposed to be a straightforward curtain-raiser, as reported by The Seattle Times.
Injury history clouds the outlook
Morris’s health is a sensitive subject in Seattle for good reason. In July 2025 he suffered a left-shoulder injury that required surgery and kept him out for weeks, according to game coverage from Field Level Media on ABC7. A few years earlier, while on loan at Swansea City in 2021, he tore an ACL, an ordeal chronicled by MLS. That history makes even a brief early-season scare feel like a big one for the club.
A quick test of depth
For now, Rothrock’s breakout night offers coach Brian Schmetzer a bit of immediate reassurance while everyone waits for medical clarity on Morris. Seattle heads to Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Feb. 28, per the club’s schedule, and supporters will be keeping a close eye out for an official update on Morris before that trip, according to Sounders FC.
