More than two and a half years after the discovery of a man's body in a creek in Germantown, a suspect has been arrested and charged with his murder. According to a press release from Montgomery County Police Department, a 22-year-old has been taken into custody for the 2023 homicide of Jose Israel Centeno Velasquez, a Gaithersburg man whose death had been considered a tragic mystery until now.
The victim was found on July 9, 2023, and upon further investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, it was confirmed that the 45-year-old suffered multiple injuries and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. With the aid of the public, tips led to the identification of the victim and Franklin Villalobos Gomez as the alleged perpetrator. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant earlier this month, and Gomez, was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Police Criminal Street Gang Unit.
Considering the gravity of the situation, Gomez now faces charges of first-degree murder as laid out in the arrest warrant issued on Sunday. The recent milestone in this case demonstrates the relentless effort of detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - Major Crimes Division, who handled the investigation, piecing together the events that led to Velasquez's untimely demise, as detailed by the Montgomery County Police Department.
Currently, Villalobos Gomez is held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he has been since his arrest on Monday. A bond hearing, which was scheduled yesterday, might serve as the beginning of a lengthy legal process surrounding this case. Details around the motive or circumstances of the alleged murder have not been released, as investigative efforts and legal proceedings continue to unfold.
