An adult male was shot last Monday afternoon at the Decatur Library and was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to local authorities. Police said the suspect was taken into custody and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

According to the DeKalb County release, Decatur Police officers responded to the library at 215 Sycamore Street around 5:10 p.m. and found the victim at the scene. The man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he remains hospitalized. Police arrested 44-year-old Medicus Brown, who is charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The library was closed through Monday, February 9, to support staff and address security concerns, according to a statement from the DeKalb County Government.

DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said the county’s priority is public safety and thanked police for their response. The county plans to increase police presence when the library reopens and to conduct a security assessment in coordination with DeKalb County Police.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved $1.9 million in SPLOST funding last December to upgrade security camera systems across the library system. DeKalb County Public Library Director Alison Weissinger said the focus remains on supporting staff and patrons while implementing additional safety measures.
