Sutter Health is handing the keys to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center to one of its own. Trevor D. Brand has been named the new chief executive officer for the system’s Oakland and Berkeley campuses, with the leadership change slated to take effect on March 30. Brand steps into the job after serving as CEO of Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, bringing experience in regional growth and clinical program expansion to one of Sutter’s most closely watched operations in the East Bay.

According to the San Francisco Business Times, Brand will report to Christina Oh, president of Sutter’s Greater San Francisco and East Bay division, and will serve as dyad partner to Alta Bates’ chief medical executive, Dr. Ursula Boynton. The outlet noted that Sutter announced the hire this week and confirmed March 30 as Brand’s official start date at Alta Bates Summit.

"Trevor is a proven, values-driven leader with a strong track record of advancing quality, access and operational excellence," Oh said in a statement quoted by Sutter Health. In that announcement, Sutter credited Brand with expanding cardiac and surgical programs at Sutter Delta, launching a catheterization lab and a DV5 surgical robotic system, improving Leapfrog safety grades and boosting employee engagement during his tenure.

What This Hire Means For The East Bay

Brand is stepping in as Sutter pushes forward on a multi-year effort to rework its East Bay footprint, including a planned medical campus in Emeryville that is expected to consolidate and expand inpatient and outpatient capacity. That redevelopment, which Sutter unveiled last year, will shift some inpatient services and create new ambulatory facilities in Berkeley and Oakland, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Brand joined Sutter Health in 2024 and previously served as chief operating officer at City of Hope Atlanta, where he oversaw operations across six states, Sutter said. The system also highlighted that he holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Georgia State University and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, signaling the kind of professional pedigree Sutter appears to be leaning on as it reshapes care in the region.
