A high-speed chase through Tamarac on Monday night ended in a violent crash that killed an innocent driver and left a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy injured, turning a busy intersection into a sprawling crime scene.
The collisions shut down the area around Northwest 31st Avenue and West Prospect Road, just west of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The driver of a pickup truck was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead, while the fleeing driver was taken into custody after a second crash. Investigators say multiple units within the Broward Sheriff’s Office are now working to piece together exactly how the pursuit unfolded.
According to NBC 6, Margate police had put out a be-on-the-lookout alert for a stolen vehicle that deputies later spotted in Tamarac. The chase reportedly kicked off after an alleged aggravated battery on a law-enforcement officer. The fleeing driver was said to have plowed through a fence at a Flanigan’s parking lot and at one point threw the vehicle into reverse and hit a marked patrol car before the later collisions. Video from the aftermath showed a BSO cruiser with heavy front-end damage and another vehicle overturned against a pole.
Arrest And Charges
Authorities identified the pickup’s driver as Ronald Wilson and the deputy involved as Brian Quintal, both of whom were hospitalized, according to WPLG Local 10. The suspect behind the wheel of the fleeing vehicle was identified as 30-year-old Sean Paul Holder.
Court and jail records show Holder was booked on multiple counts, including aggravated battery on a law-enforcement officer, grand theft auto, driving with a suspended license and "murder by another while engaged in a specified felony." Records also indicate Holder refused to appear for a scheduled bond hearing, and prosecutors say his actions triggered the fatal chain of events that ended with Wilson’s death.
Scene Accounts And Witnesses
Witnesses at a nearby 7-Eleven told 7News they heard vehicles "zooming" down the street just before the impact. They reported seeing the pursued vehicle shoot through the intersection moments before the deputy’s cruiser collided with a pickup that was making a left turn.
Local video from the scene showed a BSO cruiser with deployed airbags and a pickup truck flipped on its side as emergency crews worked under flashing lights to stabilize the wreckage. First responders transported the deputy, the suspect and at least one passenger to area hospitals. Authorities say Wilson, the pickup’s driver, was the only person who did not survive.
Investigation And What Comes Next
The Broward Sheriff’s Office says its Homicide, Violent Crimes, Traffic Homicide and Internal Affairs units are all involved in the follow-up, and that the agency’s Pursuit Review Board will be looking at whether pursuit policies were followed, as reported by Boca Post.
Prosecutors have charged Holder under a felony murder-related provision labeled "murder by another while engaged in a specified felony," a charge that can apply when a death occurs during the commission of another felony. The case remains active, and officials say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
