A Tampa man has entered a guilty plea for the armed robbery of a local gas station and firing a weapon during the crime, the Department of Justice reports. Rafael Jimenez, 31, faces a minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in federal prison, with his sentencing scheduled for April 23 according to U.S. Attorney's Office.
During the robbery, which occurred on March 8, 2025, Jimenez brandished a firearm and demanded money from a clerk before firing a shot that hit the ground behind them. Court documents show that more than $600 and cigarettes were taken from the establishment. The breakthrough in identifying Jimenez came from surveillance footage depicting his distinctive tattoo, which matched that of the gas station robber's. Investigators found further evidence in the form of a ski mask, gloves, and cigarettes of the brand stolen during the robbery among Jimenez’s trash.
The United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe revealed the guilty plea. As stated in the release from the justice.gov, "Evidence found in Jimenez’s trash included a ski mask, gloves, and cigarettes of the same brand the robber had used." The case saw collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, with Assistant United States Attorneys Samantha Newman and Suzanne Nebesky leading prosecution and handling the forfeiture.
