A snowmobile accident on a private trail in Warsaw, New York, resulted in the death of 17-year-old Steven Gregorie last Sunday, as confirmed by state police. The incident occurred around 12:12 p.m. when Gregorie, driving a 2012 Ski-Doo, lost control and struck a concealed pile of logs, causing him to be ejected from the vehicle. A 16-year-old companion on a 2015 Arctic Cat snowmobile also collided with the same obstacle, with the snowmobile landing on Gregorie.
Both victims received prompt medical attention. Gregorie was taken to Wyoming County Community Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, as reported by the New York Post. The 16-year-old, whose identity was not released, sustained minor injuries. The incident follows a similar snowmobiling accident last year that also resulted in a fatality in the area.
New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan provided details from the investigation in an interview with Audacy. He stated that the trail was properly marked and maintained. According to the findings, a 17-year-old operating a 2012 Ski-Doo left the marked trail while cresting a hill and struck a pile of wood hidden beneath the snow. O’Callaghan noted that, although an autopsy is pending from the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, the initial assessment did not indicate that high speeds or foul play contributed to the incident.
The incident occurred even though the snowmobile trail was well-maintained and clearly marked. O’Callaghan highlighted the importance of following established trails and safety guidelines. He also advised riders to control their speed and remain vigilant, particularly with the increased number of snowmobilers during favorable winter conditions, according to a statement obtained by Audacy.
