Two teenagers became the inadvertent targets in a shooting incident in Springfield's Indian Orchard neighborhood, as gunfire disrupted the peace yesterday afternoon. A ShotSpotter activation, the city's electronic gunfire detection system, alerted police to the scene at around 5:50 p.m. on Worcester Street, as reported by WWLP.
The first victim, a teen boy, was shot in the leg on the 200 block of Main Street, but was located by police on Berkshire Street. According to MassLive, he received first aid from officers until paramedics arrived and was subsequently transported to Baystate Medical Center. A second male teen, sustaining only a graze wound, arrived at the same hospital by private means. Both are expected to recover, with no life-threatening injuries reported.
The gunfire also struck structures, causing damage to a residence and a business, marking a stark illustration of the indiscriminate nature of such violence. Springfield Police continue their investigation into the matter, with no arrests made at the time of reporting.
Residents are reminded that the ShotSpotter system uses audio sensors placed in high-crime areas to detect possible gunfire and alert police quickly. The system helps Springfield police respond faster to shooting incidents, as highlighted by Monday’s events, according to WWLP.
