A quiet Tigard-area neighborhood turned into a crash scene early Friday when a pickup truck went airborne and punched through the side of a home while the family inside slept. The wreck happened just before 3 a.m., tearing through the siding and leaving the house with heavy structural damage as firefighters and deputies rushed to the 13000 block of SW Larkwood Place.
Neighbors told investigators the pickup had been speeding and driving recklessly along SW Scholls Ferry Road before it hit a dirt mound, according to FOX 12. The impact sent the truck "launched about 100 feet into the air," clearing an estimated 3-foot brick wall before crashing into the side of the house, the station reported. The bizarre trajectory left the residence with significant structural damage and debris scattered across the yard.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that the driver, identified by officials as 33-year-old Jacob Hankins, was unconscious when officers arrived. He was later arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and recklessly endangering. Hankins and a passenger were extricated from the mangled pickup at the scene and taken to a hospital, where they were treated for what authorities described as minor injuries.
Police Say Sleeping Family Walked Away Unhurt
Tigard police told FOX 12 that the family inside the home was asleep at the time of impact and, remarkably, no one in the house was hurt. Crews spent hours stabilizing the damaged structure while officers and firefighters worked around splintered wood and broken brick to clear the scene and document the crash.
Investigators Probing Speed, Other Possible Factors
Photos published with the coverage show severe damage to the home’s exterior, with a gaping hole where the truck came to rest. Police are still investigating whether speed or other factors played a role in the crash, according to The Oregonian. Authorities have not released additional information about potential charges or the identity of the passenger while the investigation remains active.
