A sinkhole of unknown origin has emerged in Lake County, reportedly disrupting traffic and causing road closures in the vicinity of Empire Church Road near Bear Lake Road in Groveland. According to WFTV, the gaping chasm was first spotted by Drone 9, prompting deputies to caution drivers to steer clear of the area while repair crews work to hastily fill the depression.
Further details shared by WESH indicated that the nearby roads, Mattioda Road and Anderson Road, can serve as detours for the time being. In communication with the local sheriff's office, WESH reported, "The school board and bus transportation have been notified, and the Lake County Road Department is on scene assessing the situation." The disruption comes on the heels of Central Florida thawing out from an unusual stint of freezing temperatures, prompting speculation about the weather being a possible contributing factor to the sinkhole's formation, although this has yet to be confirmed.
