A commercial fire at a metal recycling facility disrupted traffic along Okeechobee Road in West Palm Beach yesterday afternoon. The West Palm Beach Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene at approximately 1:15 p.m., where a scrap vehicle being processed at the facility had caught fire, as reported by the City of West Palm Beach's official website.
The blaze, which is believed to have been an accident, prompted authorities to temporarily shut down a section of the roadway near Caroline Station to safely manage to quickly respond to the emergency. Traffic flow was affected for several hours as firefighters worked to douse the flames and ensure the area was secure.
According to the city's release, there were no immediate reports of injuries related to the incident. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation; however, initial findings point to no foul play. The early assessment suggests the fire sparked accidentally during the routine processing of the scrap vehicle within the metal recycling facility.
As a result of the inferno, commuters were advised to avoid the affected part of Okeechobee Road until it was reopened later in the evening. The fire's impact on surrounding businesses and the full extent of the damage to the facility are still to be fully assessed, but city officials are urging anyone with information related to the fire to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
