A last night walk on The Plaza turned deadly when a pedestrian was struck and killed in east Charlotte, shutting down the busy corridor and drawing a heavy police and fire response that stretched into the evening.
What officials say
According to Queen City News, which cited Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the collision happened at about 7 p.m. on the 3900 block of The Plaza near East Sugar Creek Road. A Queen City News crew on scene reported that the victim was already dead when first responders arrived. Officers quickly shut down traffic in both directions while detectives documented the roadway and collected evidence.
Police response
WSOC reported that CMPD confirmed investigators were working the crash Friday night but released few other details. As of late Friday, officials had not publicly identified the pedestrian or said whether any charges might follow, keeping key questions unanswered as the inquiry continued.
Earlier crash nearby
Queen City News also noted that roughly an hour earlier, there was a separate crash about a mile north on Sugar Creek that left several people with serious injuries. Authorities have not said whether that wreck is connected in any way to the fatal collision on The Plaza.
Crews remained on scene into the evening and police described the investigation as active, according to WSOC. This story will be updated as CMPD releases more information.
