Senate Bill 1317 advanced unanimously from the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday. The measure would update the definition of a career teacher to address how status is handled when educators move between school districts. The bill is authored by Senator Jo Anna Dossett, D-Tulsa.

According to a press release from the Oklahoma Senate, current policy requires teachers to earn career status through effective or superior evaluations for three or four consecutive years. However, if they transfer to another district, they lose that status and must begin the process again. Dossett said the bill would allow a new district’s school board to recognize and carry over a teacher’s previously earned career status.

The legislation gives local school boards discretion in deciding whether to accept a transferred teacher’s career status. Districts could choose to always accept it, never accept it, or review cases individually. The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration ahead of the March 26 deadline.
