Graduate students at the University of Cincinnati are gearing up to distill complex research into bite-sized presentations that pack a punch. According to the university's announcement, the annual Three Minute Thesis Competition is set for February 25, challenging participants to succinctly explain their years of work to a general audience in just three minutes using a single slide.
The showdown will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at 1170 Clifton Court Hall, welcoming the university community and the public to witness finalists from different disciplines showcase their ideas. There’s a keen sense of anticipation as these scholars step into the limelight, with prizes up to $1,500 on the line. Unfortunately, the excitement might just be as palpable as the pressure to perform under the strict time constraint.
Topics range from breakthroughs in health and engineering to initiatives for social change and creative scholarship. The event promises a diverse tapestry of research endeavors without the jargon, emphasizing accessibility and engagement over technical prowess. As highlighted by the university, the 3MT® is an embodiment of UC's Next Lives Here initiative, which focuses on honing students' abilities to communicate their discoveries effectively. For the victor, the journey doesn't end at UC, they'll proceed to represent the institution at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools' regional 3MT® competition in March, attempting to follow in the footsteps of last year’s national competitor, Alex Sprague.
