Lakeland, Florida, became the unexpected stage for a drama of law and immigration this week as 36-year-old Venezuelan national Carlos Silva faced the consequences of a home burglary charge that put an end to his pending immigration application. According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, deputies apprehended Silva after connecting him to the theft of a $70 package from a Lakeland resident's doorstep, a crime caught on camera by the homeowner's Ring device.

The investigation began Jan. 26 after a homeowner reported a stolen package. Surveillance video showed a suspect later identified as Silva using a DoorDash delivery bag to hide his face and carry the stolen item. Deputies matched fingerprints on a discarded box found near the victim’s trash bins to Silva, and his brother confirmed Silva worked for DoorDash and that the vehicle used was his.

Silva was arrested on Tuesday at Lake Miriam Plaza. Deputies said ICE was notified and an immigration detainer was issued. He is charged with unarmed burglary and grand theft from a dwelling, with sentencing enhancements tied to his immigration status.

Sheriff Grady Judd said Silva’s arrest shows “there are serious consequences” for breaking the law in Polk County. Judd added that Silva was in the process of remaining in the country legally but “chose to commit a crime, and that decision cost him his status."
