A 59-year-old Lahaina man, Thomas Lindsey, has died after a crash on the Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui. He was involved in a southbound collision last Saturday evening that left his car overturned near the Kualapa Loop overpass and died on Sunday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Crash details
According to the Maui Police Department, Lindsey was driving a grey 2005 Nissan Altima that rear-ended a black 2023 Kia Soul while both vehicles were traveling southbound. After the impact, the Altima crossed into oncoming traffic, rolled onto its passenger side and blocked northbound travel. The Altima's front airbags deployed, while the Kia's did not. The Kia's occupants, an 82-year-old woman driver and an 83-year-old male passenger from New York, reported no injuries and were wearing seatbelts, as reported by Maui Now.
Where it happened
The crash was reported near the Kualapa Loop overpass on the Honoapiʻilani Highway, the State Route 30 corridor that runs along West Maui and carries both local and visitor traffic through the Lahaina area. The Hawaii Department of Transportation has been advancing Lahaina bypass and improvement projects to ease congestion on this stretch of Route 30, according to the Hawaii DOT.
Investigation and response
Police said speed was a factor in the collision and that whether drugs or alcohol were involved remains under investigation. Medic personnel reportedly responded to Lindsey’s residence early Sunday morning before he was treated and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 3:30 p.m. The Maui Police Department extended condolences to Lindsey’s family. This was Maui County’s first traffic fatality of 2026, compared to four at this time last year, according to Maui Now. Maui Memorial Medical Center is the county's primary acute-care hospital in Wailuku; more information is available from Maui Health.
