Two 19-year-old men sitting in a car on a quiet West Rogers Park block were suddenly caught in gunfire Sunday evening, according to Chicago police. The pair was parked on the 6100 block of North Rockwell when a suspect walked up to the vehicle and opened fire, hitting one teen in the knee and the other in the arm, with a graze wound to his abdomen.
Both men were taken to St. Francis Hospital, where they were listed in good condition. For a shooting at close range, that counts as about as lucky as it gets.
The gunfire broke out at about 6:15 p.m., according to FOX 32 Chicago, which reported that the Chicago Police Department provided the initial details. Area detectives have been assigned to the case and are working to sort out what led up to the attack.
Citywide context
While this shooting is one of several recent incidents on the North Side, it comes as Chicago overall has seen killings and shootings trend downward over the past year. As WBEZ reported in January, the city recorded its fewest killings in decades in 2025, a trend officials attribute to a mix of policing adjustments and community violence-intervention efforts.
What investigators are doing
Police have not released any description of the shooter, and no arrests had been announced as of Sunday night. Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage and are asking anyone with information to contact Chicago police, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
